The building of the
Dzagyel monastery at the end of the 19th century was initiated
by Patrul Rinpoche who was one of the greatest Buddhist masters
of all times. Like most monasteries in the region, it was destroyed
during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Finally, in 1989, the
villagers and nomads in the region were allowed to rebuild it.
Joining their forces and resources, they managed to rebuild it,
at the exact same location and using the same stones in order
to preserve its blessings. Due to the harsh climate of the region
and the poor material conditions in which it was built, today,
nineteen years later, it is in a disastrous state. As can be seen
on the pictures, rain and snow can easily penetrate the temple
and pieces of wood are falling from the roof.
Rinpoche wishes to
finance the renovation of the Dzagyel Temple, as the monks and
villagers have so often expressed their wish to preserve this
temple and its blessings. The cost of the renovation is estimated
by the local people to be around 133’000 USD.
As for the other projects in these remote areas, it is important
to understand that amounts mentioned are only estimates made by
local people. It would indeed take a two or three-day travel for
any building company to come and draw up a quote. As this too,
is quite costly, it will only be done when there is the prospect
of actually accomplishing the project.
